Derek Dunn
Derek Dunn began dancing at the Edna Lee Dance Studio in Maryland. In 2009, he continued his training at The Rock School for Dance Education in Philadelphia, until offered an apprenticeship with Houston Ballet in 2012. During his time in Houston, Dunn performed works by world renowned choreographers such as William Forsythe, Hans van Manan, Jiří Kylián, Edwaard Liang, and Stanton Welch. In 2017, Dunn joined Boston Ballet as a Soloist and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2018. Since joining Boston Ballet, Derek has expanded his repertoire to include roles such as Albrecht in Larissa Ponomorenko’s “Giselle,” Frantz in George Balanchine’s “Coppelia,” The Son in George Balanchine’s “Prodigal Son,” and Mercutio in John Cranko’s “Romeo and Juliet.” He has also performed contemporary and neo-classical works by Jorma Elo, Wayne McGregor, and Justin Peck. During his career, Dunn has earned notable recognition and awards such as the Youth Grand Prix Award in 2008 and the Senior Gold Medal in 2012 at Youth America Grand Prix, as well as the Bronze Medal at the USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi in 2010.
